Nominations open the East Coast electorate

Nominations open for Labour’s 2017 candidate in the East Coast electorate

Nominations have opened for those who wish to be the Labour candidate for the East Coast electorate in the 2017 General Election.

Anne Collins, Chair of the East Coast Labour Electorate Committee said today: “Planning for next year’s General Election is well underway I look forward to selecting a strong candidate to represent East Coast as our local MP”.

Announcing the opening of nominations, Labour General Secretary Andrew Kirton said: “Our focus is on winning next year and electing capable, energetic and forward-looking candidates to join the Labour team in Parliament. Only a Labour-led government will back the Kiwi Dream and help every New Zealander to get ahead”.

Anne Collins added that “East Coast was an electorate with huge potential for economic development but it has been neglected by this National Government. Gisborne has suffered from the railway closure. The whole electorate still has large numbers of people unable to access basic telecommunications and even populated areas like Ohope and Coastlands are unable to gain fibre broadband. Opotiki is still waiting to hear the final go-ahead on their harbour project. Kawerau is under threat with proposed electricity charge increases.”

Nomination forms and more information can be found at labour.org.nz/party_resources. Nominees must be members of the Labour Party at the time of submitting a nomination form.

Nominations for the East Coast electorate close on 6th December, 2016.
