It’s time for KiwiBuild

Just 18 affordable homes in Auckland SHAs - It’s time for KiwiBuild

New data revealing just 18 affordable homes have been built and sold to first home buyers in Auckland’s Special Housing Areas show National’s flagship housing policy has failed and Labour’s comprehensive housing plan is needed, says Leader of the Opposition Andrew Little.

“Despite the housing crisis, National has managed to get just 18 affordable houses built in Auckland in three years. Only Labour’s KiwiBuild policy to build 100,000 affordable houses will fix the problem.

“John Key promised the Auckland Housing Accord would deliver urgently needed affordable housing. Three years later, would-be first home buyers are still waiting while the Kiwi dream of owning your own place gets further and further out of reach.

“18 affordable houses is a woefully poor answer to the housing crisis gripping Auckland.

“It’s time to get serious about the housing crisis. It’s time to back the Kiwi dream.

“Labour will build 100,000 affordable houses for first home buyers to purchase, and remove restrictions that impede development. We’ll ban foreign speculators from buying existing houses and tax speculators who flip houses within five years. These policies will help stabilise house prices and give young families the opportunity to buy a place of their own,” says Andrew Little.
