Councillor’s Big Day Ruined by Taint of Discrimination

Auckland City Council needs to take a hard look at itself and do better for the diverse communities it represents, says New Zealand First’s Spokesperson for Pacific Island Affairs Pita Paraone.

“The family of newly elected city councillor, Efeso Collins, was turned away from allocated VIP seating at his swearing-in ceremony in the Auckland Town Hall.

“What should have been a proud moment for Mr Collins was tainted by the spectre of discrimination, leaving family members humiliated.

“This is not who we are as a country and we need to do better. Our democracy is built on the dreams and aspirations of people from all ethnicities and walks of life, not just the privileged few.

“New Zealand First hopes the council will learn from this experience and work hard to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

“Upholding the dignity of all people promotes inclusive and respectful communities, which strengthens us as a country,” says Mr Paraone.
