Innovative new tourism
projects funded
A new astronomy centre at Lake Tekapo
and a suite of luxury glass cabins at remote locations
throughout New Zealand will receive funding as part of the
Tourism Growth Partnership, Prime Minister and Tourism
Minister John Key announced today.
The Tourism Growth Partnership provides up to $8 million in contestable funding each year through co-investment in projects that will create new opportunities in the tourism sector.
“The Earth & Sky ‘Window to the Universe’ Astronomy Centre is a joint venture between Earth & Sky and Ngāi Tahu Tourism and will receive $3 million in funding,” Mr Key says.
“It will offer a year-round, day and night attraction to help the Tekapo region capitalise on its Dark Sky Reserve status. Tekapo is a high tourism growth area and Earth & Sky will use the funding to help provide a high quality and memorable experience for visitors.
“PurePods, which will receive co-funding of $475,000, will also take advantage of New Zealand’s impressive night skies. These self-contained clear glass units will provide unique accommodation for guests in up to 30 spectacular locations around the country.”
Since its inception in 2013, the Tourism Growth Partnership has awarded $21.2 million to 29 projects, and has attracted co-funding of $61.5 million, Mr Key says.
“With tourism now one of New Zealand’s top export earners, it’s important we continue to invest in products that target high-value visitors and encourage them to explore our regions throughout the year – this will help spread the benefits of tourism and create jobs outside the main tourist areas.
“The Tourism Growth Partnership supports the Government’s tourism strategy, which coordinates government efforts to help the sector boost the economic contribution of tourism across the country.”
The most recent round of Tourism Growth Partnership applications, including a new regionally-focused stream, closed in September. Funding decisions are expected early next year.
