Kiwi housing dream slipping further away

ASB’s latest housing confidence survey is more evidence that the Kiwi dream of owning your own home is fast disappearing, says Labour’s Housing Spokesperson Phil Twyford.

“Kiwi’s confidence in buying a home has hit an all-time low with 35 percent of people thinking it’s a bad time to buy a house. Only one-in-ten Kiwis think it’s a good time to buy.

“Aucklanders are being hit the hardest which is not surprising with average prices now over a million dollars. The ASB survey showed that, overwhelmingly, Kiwis expected house prices to continue to rise, pushing ever more first home buyers out of the market.

“The Government is doing nothing to curb the way speculators are fuelling the housing bubble. Without action today, a generation of New Zealanders will never end up realising their dream.

“Labour will restore hope with a comprehensive plan to expand housing supply. We will build 100,000 affordable homes and put a stop to speculators,” says Phil Twyford.
