Update on the New Plymouth District Council (Waitara Lands) Bill.

The Māori Affairs Select Committee is set to hear submissions on the New Plymouth District Council (Waitara Lands) Bill. The committee has received a total of 114 submissions on the bill, with 53 people wishing to be heard. The committee is planning to hold hearings on two separate dates in Taranaki.

The Committee will be hearing the first round of submissions this Friday, 18 November in New Plymouth. These hearings will be held at the Novotel on Hobson Street from 10.00am. These submissions are open to the public, and the committee welcomes those interested to come and listen to what submitters have to say. Friends and family are also invited to attend and support their whanau. The committee acknowledges that the 17th and 18th of every month are significant in the lives of iwi affiliated to Parihaka.

A second meeting will be held in Waitara in early 2017, with a venue and date to be confirmed. Again, these submissions will be open to the public and for whanau support.

The committee will also offer dates to be heard in Wellington either in person or by teleconference if submitters are unable to attend these two dates.

“These options will allow all submitters to be heard on this significant piece of legislation,” said Committee Chair Tutehounuku (Nuk) Korako.
