Where’s the Funding for Tourism Infrastructure?
The government’s plan to pump up tourism from China must include more money being made available to councils to provide much-needed infrastructure, says New Zealand First Leader and Northland Member of Parliament Rt Hon Winston Peters.
“It’s all well and good coming up with plans to boost tourism numbers with the just announced 2019 China-New Zealand Year of Tourism, but what about money for toilets and other infrastructure which are desperately needed?
“The Chinese market alone brings in $1.7 billion a year.
“Local Government New Zealand has said $1.4b was urgently needed to build tourism infrastructure around the country.
“All that the government has provided for this purpose is $5.5 million this year and $12m last year.
“Latest figures show the government took $1.5b in GST in the year to March 2016 and $950m the year before.
“More of this money should be going to assist council with their infrastructure needs,” says Mr Peters.
