ACT will declare Housing State of Emergency

ACT will insist the next government declare a Housing State of Emergency in Auckland to allow the building of new homes within the first 100 days, leader David Seymour said today.

"The pipeline and the Kaikoura earthquake has shown the government can swing into action to deal with crises. With children dying and teachers fleeing the city, It is past time we let builders and developers get on with the job of dealing with the housing crisis in the same way."

“A new Housing Skills Shortage list will bring in much needed construction workers and others needed to get on with the job and build more houses."

“This epidemic of increased homelessness, poverty, and the deaths of 20 children is directly due to the severe lack of housing supply in New Zealand, but especially in Auckland.

“National has failed on the housing crisis over the past nine years, and with polls showing ACT could emerge on Saturday with three seats, we will make National finally take action.

“ACT would use emergency powers and public, including military, land to create Kaikoura-style Temporary Worker Villages, so skilled migrants have a place to stay.

“We need more homes immediately. These measures would compliment ACT’s already announced policies of:

o Replacing the RMA with an Urban Development Act to free up land

o Sharing half the GST on infrastructure with local councils to fund infrastructure

o Introducing Queensland-style private insurance in place of Council building consents
