Needless concern for ACC levy hikes
ACC Minister Iain Lees-Galloway should rule out needless increases in the ACC Motor Vehicle Levies to prevent further pain at the pump for New Zealand motorists, National’s ACC spokesperson Tim Macindoe says.
“After being questioned multiple times, Mr Lees-Galloway has repeatedly refused to rule out an increase in the Motor Vehicle Levy, which would see a further 1.9 cent per litre increase in the price of petrol.
“He has claimed that figures in ACC’s recent Annual Reports justify the increase when in fact they do exactly the opposite.
“By his own admission, the asset-to-liability ratio in the Motor Vehicle account has been well above ACC’s own funding position target for several consecutive years, which indicates that ACC should have consulted on a decrease in the Motor Vehicle Levy, not its proposed increase.
“It is not too late for Mr Lees-Galloway to do the decent thing in what’s been his most disastrous week as a Minister and rule out more increases to the fuel tax through ACC.”
