Rural New Zealand Needs Protection Not Red Tape

Rural New Zealand Needs Protection Not Red Tape

Thursday 1st Jul 1999
Owen Jennings
Media Release -- Justice

ACT Rural Spokesman Owen Jennings today said rural New Zealanders need protection from criminals not increased red tape and cost that a gun registration system would dump on them.

"Government should be getting tougher on the criminals, not on law-abiding rural New Zealanders," said Owen Jennings.

"New Zealanders on farms and in rural communities want crime and its causes urgently addressed by Government. They feel frustrated by the Government's proposal to impose a gun registration system that will prove costly and will do nothing to keep them safe from criminals.

"Rather than addressing the real causes of crime, gun registration simply puts more red tape, costs and bureaucracy on the backs of farmers who already face a stringent firearms licensing process," said Owen Jennings.
