OTAKI SCHOOLS TO GET $2.65 MILLION FROM EDUCATION WORKS PROGRAMME

Roger Sowry, National list MP for Otaki said that 23 local schools will get more than $2.65 million from the Government's 1999/2000 property works programme announced today by the Minister of Education.

"The projects are part of the $371 million of new investment in schools across the country. This Government is delivering a better learning environment for both teachers and students as education enters the 21st century."

The projects for the electorate cover a huge range of items, from adding new classrooms to replacing carpets,. fencing and up-grading school facilities.

"The main targets of the programme for the year are supporting growth, modernisation and mopping up the last vestiges of the $500 million of deferred maintenance left by the last Labour Government," Mr Sowry said.

"Schools now have the option of using their deferred maintenance funding for modernisation, allowing Boards of Trustees to decide for themselves what qualitative property solution their funding entitlement is spent on. The overall aim is to empower schools to determine their own property needs."

Applications have also recently been invited for the $35 million Financial Assistance Scheme, and allocations will be announced in October. The FAS includes separate pools for modernisation, community based projects, primary school halls and information technology cabling and wiring.
