United Calls For NZ Aid For Taiwan Quake Victims

22 September 1999

UNITED CALLS FOR NEW ZEALAND AID FOR TAIWAN EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS

United New Zealand leader, Hon Peter Dunne, is calling on the New Zealand Government to offer emergency aid to the victims of the Taiwan earthquake.

“New Zealand has many close ties with Taiwan, and shares with it the risk of exposure to a major earthquake.”

“Just as we have seen fit to send peacekeeping troops to East Timor to thwart suffering and bloodshed in that small territory, so too should we be prepared to now offer modest and appropriate first aid or other assistance to Taiwan in its time of need.”

“A New Zealand emergency assistance contribution would be a small, tangible of letting the Taiwanese community in New Zealand know of both our support for the contribution they are making to our society, and of our deep concern at the impact of the tragedy that has befallen their country.”

“The United New Zealand Party expresses its condolences to all New Zealand’s Taiwanese families who have suffered loss or anxiety as a result of this devastating earthquake in their mother country,” Mr Dunne says.
