Exploitation of Children During Elections to Cease

New Zealand First Member of Parliament, Gilbert Myles, today released correspondence from the Commissioner for Children which upholds Mr Myles complaint that children have been exploited during recent political advertising.

The complaint, lodged on 8 November 1999, cites examples of children being manipulated by the Labour and National Parties in advertisements designed to give the viewer the impression that young people support the views of these respective parties.

“Such callous disregard for the rights and privacy of young people highlights the lengths these two tired old parties are prepared to go”, said Mr Myles “And I am pleased that the Commissioner for children has confirmed that view and is reminding political parties of their responsibilities in that regard.
