NZ Unemployed In Oz

PRESS RELEASE
29 February 2000

Nick Barber
Employment Spokesperson

NZ UNEMPLOYED IN OZ

Christian Heritage Party Spokesman on Employment, Nick Barber, said today that, “New Zealand pays some $150 million per year to subsidise New Zealand unemployed in Australia but Helen Clark says she may consider paying the full amount of $300 to $400 million if Australia insists (Radio New Zealand, 28 February). How generous of her! Ms Clark’s story seemed to change during the day. By the 6.00 pm news she was reportedly against paying extra to Australia.”

Mr Barber said, however, “If those unemployed were receiving the benefit in New Zealand it would be our businesses receiving the flow-on effects and improved performance from the cash injection, but under the present situation it is Australian businesses and workers that receive the injection of funds.

“Ms Clark should stop playing Mother Christmas and take another look at the issue and with due regard to our balance of payment deficit, our poor economic performance relative to Australia and the many promises she has already made to other social service sectors. She should put up a real fight to defend our employers, their workers and potential additions to the workforce from yet another grab at the little case we have to keep our social services afloat. Whatever happens, she should not even consider increasing our payouts to Oz.”
