God Defend New Zealand – Who the Hell Else Will?

God Defend New Zealand – But Who the Hell Else Will?

“The New Zealand Government is no longer prepared to defend New Zealand,” observes Libertarianz Defence Spokesman Robert Winefield. Much waling and gnashing of teeth from opposition parties accompanies the collapse of the F16 deal, but Winefield points out that all are in fact guilty. Successive politicians from all parties have signally failed in one of government’s crucial legitimate roles: defending our borders.

But what was merely implicit with those previous governments is now explicit with this one, says Winefield. “We will no longer even pretend to defend ourselves it seems, but instead will throw ourselves into the arms of the United Nations - that organisation that organised the farcical horror of Somalia, and stood by and allowed the holocaust of Srebrenica.”

“Within three years we will no longer have an air force, even one as ineffectively equipped as we have now. Of course UN peace-keeping and policing missions very rarely require airborne interdiction, so instead Comrade Clarke no doubt intends continuing the dubious policy of sending ill-equipped land troops to risk their lives in foreign parts.”

Of course, in doing so she merely follows the strategic philosophy espoused by the defence policies of previous governments to its logical conclusion. The governments of Lange, Bolger, Shipley and Clarke have all subscribed to the strategy of signing over control of our defence forces to the United Nations. It is no surprise to see this policy and its related disarmament continue.

Libertarianz, by contrast, completely rejects the idea that we should leave our defence to the UN. Instead it would seem we are now the only party advocating that New Zealand could – and should - be able to defend itself. “For,” says Winefield, “we cannot long remain even semi-free, as long as we remain defenceless!”
