Balanced defence only option - Young Nats

A clear message was sent to the Clark Government by delegates at the Young Nationals Policy Conference today - that a balanced defence force is the only option for a New Zealand committed to its ANZAC and international obligations.

Following a strong speech from New Zealand National Party Leader Jenny Shipley, which focused on defence as a key issue, a remit supporting the development of a combined and balanced defence force was unanimously passed.

Speaking at the conclusion of the debate, Policy Chair Grant Tyrrell said; "It is crucial that New Zealand ensures they have a credible and balanced defence force. New Zealand is a partner in the ANZAC relationship and as such must pull its weight. Situations such as East Timor clearly show the fallacy behind a 'specialist force.'

'With the welching of the F-16 contract by Helen Clark, it is now vital that the rot is halted. New Zealand can not afford any further degradation to its defence forces', Grant Tyrrell concluded.
