Better Sharemilker Representation In South Island

Better Sharemilker Representation In South Island A Priority

Increasing its South Island presence is a priority for Federated Farmers Sharemilkers' Section.

"Sharemilking in the South Island has increased markedly in the last few years. This is good news for the sharemilking industry, but unfortunately the Sharemilkers' Section representation has not kept pace" commented Conall Buchanan, Sharemilkers' Section chairperson.

"The Sharemilkers' Section have undertaken to increase representation within the South Island. Although there are Federated Farmers sharemilker members in almost every South Island province, there are few Sharemilkers' Section groups. These groups are a go-between a particular province's sharemilkers, and the Section's National Council."

"South Island sharemilking differs from sharemilking in the North Island. The scale tends to be larger, there are more multi-partner farm ownerships, the dairying infrastructure is less established, including the staff pool, and a different climate."

"The issues faced by sharemilkers are different as well. A strong, active network of provincial Sharemilkers' Section groups are needed so that local issues are effectively addressed at a local and national level."

"Any South Island sharemilker who wants to establish a group or to join a provincial Sharemilkers' Section should contact the federation by telephoning 0800-327-646 for the South Island Representatives' contact details."

"Any new Sharemilkers' Section groups will have full administrative and policy support from Federated Farmers."

"No one else will go into bat for us. Sharemilkers must stand up and be counted. This ensures that sharemilkers' voices are heard when it counts," concluded Mr Buchanan.
