Agencies' Role In CYFS Needs Careful Consideration

Welfare Agencies' Role In Child Youth And Family Needs ‘Careful Consideration’ - PSA

The role volunteer welfare agencies are set to play in the Child Youth and Family Services needs to be clearly detailed and monitored, the PSA said today.

‘We recognise the considerable demands Child Youth and Family Services are under, indeed our members know this better than anyone,’ the PSA national secretary Richard Wagstaff said.

‘However this proposal, while encouraging on some fronts, continues to raise important questions and issues for our members,’ he said.

‘We believe there is still a lot of detail that needs to be worked out between all involved. There has to be a clear understanding about the role and scope these agencies play,’ he said.

‘While we see the value of partnerships with these groups and the New Zealand community no-one will be helped if things run away from us in the upcoming weeks. There cannot be any confusion of the roles everyone is going to play,’ he said.

Mr Wagstaff said all parties, including the PSA, had to firstly agree on the contribution these agencies will make. It also will need to guarantee the maintenance of high standards of service and the on-going and important re-building of the department’s internal capacity.

‘We want things to be better – everyone does and the PSA will play a part in that,’ he said.
