"Listening To Children"

"Feedback about the needs of young people is essential if communities are to meet those needs," the Commissioner for Children told the Westport Youth Advisory Committee today.

Mr McClay is in Westland for two days to meet a range of community organisations working with and for children and young people.

The Commissioner for Children told the Youth Advisory Committee of his plans, with extra budget funding to establish a Youth Advisory council for the Office of the Commissioner for Children. He said it would be a group of children and young people "who can represent organisations and geographical areas and which can offer advice to members of my staff and me".

"We should listen to children. They have a right to be consulted, especially about matters which affect them," he said.
