TIANZ Welcomes Govt's Rejection Of The ‘Room Tax'

TIANZ Welcomes Government’s Rejection Of The ‘Room Tax’ Recommendation

Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIANZ) Chief Executive, John Moriarty welcomed the Government’s decision to reject the recommendation to include a ‘room-tax’ in the Local Government Rating Bill.

“The proposed room-tax rate included in the draft Bill concerned us greatly. It came as a surprise to see it appear after submissions closed, especially as it was at odds with Government’s regional development policies. Such a rate could have put hotels and motels all over the country out of business.”

“Government’s decision to have this provision removed shows that it listened to the Association’s arguments and industry’s concerns.”

“We are pleased that Government is working with us to create the conditions for tourism to grow sustainably into the future and that they clearly recognise the importance of our industry to New Zealand’s development.”
