Radical Change to Child Support Act Demanded.

Parent and Child advocacy groups today announced the forming of the Coalition for a Fair and Reasonable Child Support Regime. " Child Support Assessment notices for 2003 are arriving and 87000 paying parents find themselves facing increases from $11.91 to several hundred dollars a month. Fathers, Parents and Child advocacy groups have noticed a major increase in the number of “liable parents” contacting them for support" spokesperson James Nicolle said today.

"One parent has had his assessment change from $10080 to 13304,for the support of one 2yr old child, an increase of over 30%. Other parents have found themselves facing horrendous increases in Child Support calculated via the formula assessment. Parents have had enough and are demanding radical change to the Child Support Act"

"When a child is born there are two parents, the child’s best interest is served by an active involvement of both parents in their life. The Child Support Act reduces one parent to the status of a "liable parent", who can pay thousands of dollars via a formula assessment and never see their child. Even if you see your child or have them stay with you overnight on the weekends no relief is granted for the liable parents expenses, maintaining a room, transport, entertainment etc, (except in very limited circumstances) when caring for their child"

"This year is an election year and we are going to put a radical change of the Child Support Act on the election Agenda. All we are asking for is a fair and reasonable Child Support Regime that treats both parents as real parents "
