TVNZ is to restructure its Programme Commissioning Department to provide a stronger focus on its commercial and Charter objectives.

TVNZ Head of Television, Shaun Brown, said the new structure would be based on genre specific commissioners, rather than the previous model of being assigned by channel. He announced two key appointments of Irene Gardiner as Senior Commissioner responsible for managing the overall commissioning process and Geoff Steven as Head of Programme Development responsible for identifying and developing new programme ideas and formats in the entertainment genre.

"I am delighted that both of these experienced and talented commissioners have accepted the new and exciting challenges that are represented in this restructuring.

"Within the new structure, Geoff and Irene will retain specific commissioning roles. Irene will be responsible for the commissioning of documentaries for both channels and will continue to take responsibility for managing the output of TVNZ's internal production unit.

"Geoff will be responsible for commissioning all entertainment programmes for both channels. His talent for identifying and developing new programmes and formats is widely acknowledged and makes him the perfect choice to lead TVNZ's new focus on this endeavour. A Deputy Commissioner of Entertainment Programmes will be appointed to support Geoff," said Mr Brown.

John McRae is confirmed as Commissioner, Drama and Comedy, including children's drama. He has agreed to manage TVNZ's drama and comedy properties on a transitional basis and will work with Mr Brown to identify and recruit the next Drama Commissioning Editor to allow John to return to the consultancy role he previously carried out for TVNZ.

John Wright has been appointed Commissioner, Factual Programmes. This genre is built around unscripted observational series such as Motorway Patrol, Park Rangers and Location Location Location. He will also continue his responsibilities with Shortland Street.

Carolyne Meng-Yee has been appointed Commissioning Editor for Special Interest Programmes including arts programmes. She will also provide an overview of a number of off-peak programmes on both channels.

These changes will take effect from 1 May 2002.
