Funding Demand For Mäori Radio Programmes Keeps Growing

Te Mängai Päho has received the highest ever number of applications for funding new Mäori radio programmes, reflecting the huge depth of interest in Mäori broadcasting.

From comedy and children’s shows to documentaries, news and sports coverage, TMP Chief Executive Trevor Moeke says the latest round of Mäori language radio programme applications reflects the high quality of programming on iwi stations.

The Mäori broadcasting agency has received 52 applications totalling over $8 million worth of production in its latest request for proposals.

Te Mängai Päho, along with industry and radio station representatives, will carefully consider the applications before allocating the $2 million worth of funding available for Mäori language radio programmes.

“The range and depth of applications to produce Mäori language radio programmes is outstanding and indicates the high level of interest from the industry.

“We are delighted to have such a range of high quality applications to choose from because quality radio programming is the key to a successful Mäori radio network. We want to provide iwi stations, which Te Mängai Päho also funds, with an even greater selection of programmes to complement their local and shared broadcasting work. ”

Trevor Moeke says the applications also feature news and current affairs programmes which are vital to the Mäori radio network, along with programmes for young and elderly people.

“Te Mängai Päho is dedicated to revitalising Mäori language and culture. A tried way to achieve that is through enjoyable and interesting programming – programmes which people want to listen to.”

The agency expects to announce the successful applicants by middle of May 2002.
