CHP Calls On Government To Introduce Jubilee Medal

3 May 2002

The CHP is concerned that the Government is doing little to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty’s accession to the throne.

“The Government missed a golden opportunity while the Queen was in the country to announce how it plans to celebrate this significant milestone,” observed Party Leader Graham Capill.

“This week Britain released a Jubilee Medal to mark this significant anniversary. NZ has maintained an ominous silence. As the Queen is NZ’s Head of State, surely it would be appropriate for NZ to recognise this milestone in history.

“CHP is calling upon all parties to co-operate in finding meaningful ways to celebrate the Golden Jubilee. Public opinion polls continue to show support for the monarchy and given the level of public interest during the Queen’s recent visit, there would be considerable interest in appropriate commemorations.

“In 1977 a Jubilee Medal was issued. The CHP wants to know if the government will be doing likewise in 2002.

“Other appropriate initiatives could include the creation of scholarships or prizes, carrying the Golden Jubilee inscription. Those would ensure that the importance of the Monarchy is underscored to the next generation.

“Whatever is decided, it is time to lay aside party political interests and seek to do something that shows this country’s gratitude to Her Majesty for years of public service,” Mr Capill concluded.
