Climate Change Consultation

9 May 2002

Climate Change Consultation On The Government's Preferred Policy Package:

Forums and Meetings

Businesses, local government representatives and special interest groups will have the opportunity to discuss the Government's preferred policy package on climate change in a series of forums, meetings and hui taking place around the country this month (see timetables for details).

As well as meetings for business and sector representatives in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch (8-10 May), there will be a series of regional, business and local government forums, meetings focusing on forestry and farming, and hui to discuss Maori issues.

The meetings will involve a brief presentation of the preferred policy package, followed by an opportunity for feedback and discussion.

The preferred policy package for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in response to climate change and the Kyoto Protocol was announced on 30 April by the Convenor of the Ministerial Group on Climate Change, Pete Hodgson.

A consultation document on this package and the rationale behind it has been released and is available on the website www.climatechange.govt.nz

The consultation document includes a series of questions and issues intended to guide discussion at the meetings and hui. Issues arising out of the meetings will be taken into account when final decisions are made on the Government's climate change policies.

The May meetings form the second round of public consultation on climate change. The first round took place from October - December 2001.
