ACT President congratulates Sir Roger Douglas

ACT New Zealand President Catherine Judd today congratulated Sir Roger Douglas on being awarded the Hayek medal, a rare and internationally prestigious honour named after the great Austrian economist, Friedrich August von Hayek.

Ms Judd said that in presenting the medal the German Hayek Society had said of Sir Roger, “This medal is given to outstanding politicians, entrepreneurs and scholars who stand for the aims and values of a free society and who, as you did in your whole political life, courageously defend the principles of classical liberalism in our days.”

“This is the first time the Hayek medal has been awarded to someone outside of Europe. It is an enormous honour to have a New Zealander receive it,” said Ms Judd.

“Sir Roger is recognised internationally as one of the greatest figures of the 20th century. His reforms promoting economic growth and greater personal freedom as the route to a better society and the only way out of poverty and disadvantage, made New Zealand a world leader in economic and social reform during the 1980s.

“It is my aim to ensure that ACT New Zealand continues Sir Roger’s fight for the free society he envisaged and we will continue to defend and promote the principles of classical liberalism,” said Ms Judd.
