Real agenda shows in Fitzsimons comments

Real agenda shows in Fitzsimons comments

The real agenda of those who are opposed to responsible use of GM in New Zealand doesn’t take long to show through, LSN Executive Member Dr Jack Richardson, said today.

‘Jeanette Fitzsimons chose to attack multinational seed and chemical companies as part of the reason for her party’s opposition to GM.

“Unfortunately Ms Fitzsimons seems to have forgotten that the vast majority of research and development work being done with GM technology in New Zealand is by small New Zealand owned companies and the Crown’s own research institutes and universities.

“The overseas companies she wrongly complains of, abuses and misrepresents, have no early intentions of bringing their technologies to New Zealand. They will only bring GM products in when there are viable markets for them. That will only happen in the agricultural sector when farmers are persuaded the products can deliver value at the farm gate.

“In the meantime New Zealand companies are concentrating on developing high value niche products which are suitable for the New Zealand environment and the New Zealand market,” concluded Dr Richardson.
