The big issues of public policy being debated in this general election involve big amounts of tax money – or do they?

How is a voter to know?

Education, Crime, and Health politics all involve billions of tax dollars, and the choices being offered to voters rarely come costed. But someone has to pay. For many it is ok that it is ‘someone else’ – “the government should pay”.

policy.net.nz has introduced a companion service along with many of the pages of policy comparisons – we have keyed in the numeric facts to many policy pages, tied directly to the 2002 Budget numbers, or the official 2001 Crime statistics. All numbers are sourced from the Treasury website, and the Police website, allowing readers to download the original references.
