Labour Needs A Rational Partner, Not 'The Frighteners' - United Future

Last night's leaders debate on TV 3 confirms the need for a rational partner for Labour should they not achieve an outright majority, according to Inky Tulloch, President of the United Future party.

Mr Tulloch said the debate confirmed his party's view that neither the Greens nor New Zealand First were acceptable partners for Labour.

"Both Jeanette Fitzsimons and Winston Peters came across as rabid."

"They are determined to put 'the frighteners' on the average New Zealander whether it be by scare mongering about Genetic Modification or creating racial disharmony by threatening to limit immigration.

"By comparison United Future, in both its policies and its parliamentary leadership seems incredibly sane and rational.

" It would have been nice to see Peter Dunne on that programme to introduce a note of reason. What last night showed was the usual degeneration into personal abuse and petty point scoring, proving nothing much has changed in three years"

Mr Tulloch said his party remained confident of winning the Ohariu Belmont seat and increasing its list vote to 5 per cent, despite the fact that it was not registering on current polls.

" Our campaign gets into full swing next week with television advertising, so we believe we will start to register with voters.

"We have 63 electorate candidates standing in this election and 61 on the party list. This is the second largest list of all the Parties and will undoubtedly see a significant number of MP's in the next parliament."
