NZMA welcomes appointment

The New Zealand Medical Association is delighted that Chairman Dr John Adams has been appointed Dean of the University of Otago's Dunedin School of Medicine.

The role of Chairman of the NZMA is a very significant one, and dates back to 1887. As the head of New Zealand's largest doctors' organisation, the Chairman's role is high profile and involves significant levels of political advocacy and media relations, as well as taking a leadership role of the medical profession.

New Zealand Medical Association Deputy Chair Dr Tricia Briscoe says Dr Adams leadership experience with the NZMA and of the medical profession should stand him in good stead in his new position.

"Dr Adams has always taken a strong interest in medical student issues, particularly the long-term workforce problems caused by student debt. Though a psychiatrist, he has been a vigorous advocate for general practice. He also oversaw the transition from printed to online New Zealand Medical Journal. "We are thrilled that his experience and skills in the public arena have been acknowledged in this way."

Dr Adams' two year term as Chairman ends next April, and a new Chair will be elected early next year.
