Coal no solution to Maui Gas
Auckland 10 February 2003: “Coal is not a feasible replacement for Maui Gas which is expected to run out in 2007,” said Robbie Kelmen, Greenpeace climate campaigner.
“The idea that coal can replace Maui gas is ludicrous. The Government’s global warming obligations must be towards developing new renewable energy sources and , not rely on coal, which contributes heavily to global warming.”
Publicity around the evaporation of Maui gas has highlighted the lack of a Government Energy Strategy. The Government cannot divorce energy and climate change strategies, the two are intimately linked.
“An energy strategy must be Government-lead, include Kyoto Protocol obligations and logically include wind energy which New Zealand has in abundance.”
