Select Cttee on the New Organisms & Other Matters

GE Free NZ 23.7.03

Media Advisory

Friday 25th July – 8.30 a.m., Central Airport Hotel, Auckland

Hearings of the Parliamentary Select Committee on the New Organisms and Other Matters (NOOM) Bill

A second day of hearings in Auckland will see scientists, doctors, environmental and community groups, all of whom are concerned about GE environmental release, speaking to MP’s about submissions on the “NOOM” Bill.

The Bill aims to set rules for GE including conditional release of GE organisms. The hearings are an important step in the process needed to put in place a legal framework that will protect GE-Free production.

There is disappointment amongst many of the thousands of members of the public who made submissions on the Bill that they have not been invited to be heard by the Select Committee.

The submission from GE Free NZ in food and environment will be presented by Jon Carapiet at 8.30 am.

Other groups presenting during the day include Physicians and Scientists for Responsible Genetics, and Friends of the Earth.
