Challenges for new State Services Commissioner

The PSA looks forward to working with new State Services Commissioner Mark Prebble on the continuing development of an integrated and co-ordinated public service, PSA national secretary Paul Cochrane said today.

“While there has been some progress made on rebuilding the public service after the debilitating effects of the policies of the 90’s, there is still much more to do.

“We would like to see the rebuilding of capacity and capability in the public service accelerated. We believe the State Services Commission needs to urgently take a stronger leadership role in working to achieve a cohesive and integrated public service.

Paul Cochrane said the PSA would like to see the State Services Commission extend its traditional role of reviewing and evaluating individual agencies within the public service to influencing and shaping the performance of the public service as a whole.

“The PSA would like to see more emphasis on a whole-of-government approach to the public service with more collaboration and co-ordination between agencies. We look forward to working closely with the new State Services Commissioner in helping the Commission play a more active role in facilitating that”.
