Max Stahl, Filmmaker Public Screening

PUBLIC SCREENING 7:00pm TUE 1 JUNE 2004 SEMINAR ROOM 029 CLOCKTOWER BUILDING, UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND, PRINCES ST

All Welcome. Koha For The Archive Appreciated

In 1991, at great personal risk, Max Stahl filmed the Dili massacre in East Timor. His footage revealed the brutality of the Indonesian military regime to the world and hence assisted in the eventual liberation of Timor. Max will discuss the experience of filming the massacre and smuggling out the footage with Annie Goldson who used his archive in "Punitive Damage". Max was back in Timor during the referendum in 1999, again recording the violence, and subsequently has set up the new nation's first
archive. Max will also screen "Justice Denied", a recent film he produced for the Australian abc which investigates the "truth and reconciliation" process and which casts new light on the meaning of un nation building and peace making.

Sponsored by the Department of Film, Television and Media Studies, University of Auckland and the Screen Directors Guild of New Zealand (SDGNZ)
