Te Mangoroa oppose the seabed and foreshore legislation

An Otautahi (Christchurch) organisation “Te Mangoroa” oppose the legislation being pushed through Parliament today in respect of the seabed and foreshore. “Today marks a very sad day for Maori and New Zealand citizens. We never thought that we would experience an act of confiscation in our lifetime, as our tipuna had. Obviously we are wrong” states co-spokespersons, Malcolm Mulholland and Sasha McMeeking.

“If the Government believe that this is the end of the issue, then they are mistaken. This is only the start of a fight that the Government are never going to win”, says Mulholland.

“Okeroa needs to listen to the people he represents. Failure to do so will result in his ousting come the next election – in reality he is signing his own political death warrant by voting for the legislation”, states Mulholland.

"This legislation breaches fundamental human rights, the hypocrisy of our Government in championing human rights internationally, while trampling on those of our indigenous population embarrasses us as a nation", states co-spokesperson Sasha McMeeking. "It is an unworkable, ill considered piece of legislation, opposed by 94% of submitters to the Select Committee. Unless it is stopped now, we as a country will inherit a legacy of bad law All New Zealand citizens should be opposed to this bill", states McMeeking.
