Rebate Claim Process For Tsunami Donations

MEDIA RELEASE
14 January 2005

INLAND REVENUE OUTLINES REBATE CLAIM PROCESS FOR TSUNAMI DONATIONS

Inland Revenue today outlined the process around claiming a rebate for donations made to tsunami relief funds.

"Given the enormity of this tragedy and the number of New Zealanders making donations to tsunami relief funds, we want to make it as straightforward as possible for people to claim a rebate," says Acting Service Delivery Deputy Commissioner, Jim Scully.

Tsunami donations of $5 or more made to approved charities through third parties - such as banks, churches, supermarkets and other retail outlets will be eligible for a rebate, provided a receipt or proof of payment showing the donation is obtained, says Mr Scully.

Mr Scully added that contrary to some recent queries, no GST was deducted from any donation made to a charitable organisation.

Rebate claim forms for donations are completed annually each April. Detailed information on claiming a rebate for tsunami donations and a list of approved charities is provided on our website at, www.ird.govt.nz/promotion/tsunami.html .
