Old bones found at building site

Work on a new subdivision in the Waikato this morning came to a halt after the discovery of a skull and bones.

Workmen were digging a drain at the subdivision on a back road between Huntly and Ngaruawahia this morning when they discovered the skull and other bones in the earth.

Police were this morning meeting with Tainui kaumatua in a bid to establish the age of the bones and if the site was of any significance to the tribe. Initial indications were that the bones were very old. They are currently being assessed at the University of Waikato.

Work on the site has stopped until further notice.
