Fathers' Day Out

21 February 2005

Fathers' Day Out

Destiny New Zealand put its Empowering Families policy into action this weekend with a celebration of fatherhood in Rotorua.

Hawea Vercoe, Destiny NZ delegate for the Waiariki Maori electorate, told leaders at Tamatekapua Marae that the time had come to restore mana to the role of fatherhood.

"Our responsibility as fathers is to our children and the generations to come - it is time to take our place as role models and leaders in our families and our communities", said Vercoe.

Destiny NZ Leader Richard Lewis joined Vercoe and other Destiny NZ delegates for the daylong celebration, which included a 450-strong kapa haka at the Rotorua lakefront and Government Gardens.

The Destiny NZ Maori delegates will be attending Te Matatini Festival in Palmerston North this weekend.
