Jonathan Hunt receives top honour

1 April 2005 The Right Honourable Jonathan Hunt is invested as a Member of the Order of New Zealand by Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright. The Order of New Zealand is the country's highest honour and is restricted to 20 members. Mr Hunt's citation reads: "For services to Parliament and as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Mr Hunt was a Member of Parliament from 1966 until this year and was the longest serving member of the House of Representatives. He was Deputy, then Acting Speaker before being elected Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1999. He was re-elected to this position in 2002. His many positions in Parliament include Member for New Lynn, Junior Government Whip, permanent member of New Zealand Inter Parliamentary Group, negotiator for the Labour Party coalition negotiating team, member and chairman of many House committees, Chairman of the Parliamentary Service Commission, Senior Opposition Whip, a Minister of the Crown and Leader of the House. Mr Hunt was appointed a Privy Councillor in 1989."
