NAVY SHIP to help with toxic substance recovery

The Maritime Safety Authority (MSA) has requested assistance from the NZ Defence Force to locate and recover a number of packages of toxic substance in the water in the vicinity of the Poor Knights, Northland.

At midnight the Navy’s diving support vessel, HMNZS MANAWANUI sailed Devonport Naval Base for Marsden Point, Whangarei to provide assistance to the Maritime Safety Authority. MANAWANUI is expected to arrive at Marsden Point at 8:00 am this morning.

On arrival the ship will uplift specialist personnel and equipment provided by the NZ Fire Service and proceed immediately to the recovery area.

Yesterday, a P3 Orion aircraft from the RNZAF located a number of packages in the water providing further information on the location and spread of the packages.
