National’s Policy Bashes Workers
National’s industrial relations policy shows it is more interested in bashing workers and their unions than valuing the labour force as the backbone of the economy, Council of Trade Unions president Ross Wilson said today.
The policy has been released by the party’s industrial relations spokesperson Wayne Mapp.
“National has shown it is only interested in taking away the gains that workers have won over the last few years,” Ross Wilson said.
“The policy attacks security of employment with the plan for a 90-day probation period, it removes extra pay for working public holidays and weakens the law to protect workers with safe and healthy workplaces.”
National had failed to notice that unions were working hard alongside the Government and business organisations to improve productivity and ensure a high quality, high skill economy.
“National wants to take us back to the adversarial days of the 1990s with the type of policies that have left us with the low wages and skill shortages that slow economic and social development today,” Ross Wilson said.
The policy to remove the automatic right of union access to workplaces was straight-out union bashing.
“It shows that National is prepared to take away workers’ union rights, which is also an attack on their human rights.”
