Progressive's youngest candidate campaigns in Port Waikato

The Progressive party has selected twenty-year-old Max Panirau as its candidate in Port Waikato in this year's election where he will be campaigning for party votes, says party president Grant Gillon.

"I meet lots of people who know about the regional economic development and anti-drugs policies of Jim Anderton and I'll be seeking party votes for Progressive so we can continue getting on with the job," Max Panirau said today.

"We have made solid progress toward our goal of a full-employment society but we still have work to do. We can't afford to waste time with a change of government promising a lolly scramble that can't be afforded," he said.

"Our key policies this election include doubling the number of apprenticeships and having everyone under 20 in a job, education or training by 2007. Our tertiary policy is to cut the debt burden for graduates prepared to work and use their skills in New Zealand.

"Other key policies include fighting the youth binge drinking culture with tighter restrictions on liquor advertising and raising the alcohol purchasing age back to where it belongs, and cutting the company tax rate to encourage even more job-creation," he said.

MAX PANIRAU - PORT WAIKATO (027-404-5520)

Auckland-born, Max completed his high school education at Wesley College before graduating with a Diploma in Restaurant and Bar Service from the Manukau Institute of Technology. He is currently managing a cafe and his other work experience since graduation has been in both sales and management in the hospitality industry.

Max is a people person, coaches local teams in touch rugby and hockey and has family links to Ngati Kahu (Ngapuhi).

The Progressive Party is a partner in the coalition government first elected in 1999. Its leader, Jim Anderton, is the third-ranked Cabinet Minister with responsibility for Economic, Industry and Regional Development and for driving the coalition government's campaign against drug abuse.
