Destiny New Zealands Minority Rights Track Record

Press Statement for Immediate Release

Destiny New Zealands Minority Rights Track Record

HappyClappingHomos would like to praise Destiny New Zealand on its sense of irony.

In a party press release Hawea Vercoe, the Destiny New Zealand candidate for Waiariki makes mention of the need to preserve Maori seats given the recent attacks by other parties regarding their validity. In a piece entitled the “Tyranny of the Majority” Vercoe states “Why do they need to attack Maori people like that” when commenting on calls to have the seats abolished. The statement then goes on and says “Maori will fall victim of the Tyranny of the majority – where the rights of the minority are crushed by the will of the majority” and concludes with the lovely and impassioned plea “So why don’t all you protesters about Maori seats ask yourself this simple question – Are Maori seats hurting me in any way? If they are not then they should for ever hold their peace and get on with life”.

HappyClappingHomos would like to point out the irony that Mr. Vercoe has obviously missed. Destiny New Zealand caution on the “tyranny of the majority”, this self same organisation is also using the argument “how to Maori seats hurt you?” All the while it is the organisation that was the driving factor in two marches to expose the “radical homosexual agenda”, and deny civil unions because Destiny was in the “moral majority”

It was this very same organisations spiritual leader advocating for the repealing of the Homosexual Law Reform act. It is this identical organisation that has been hosting nationwide rallies exposing the evils of homosexuality and how gays should simply disappear quietly back into the closet. We remind Mr. Vercoe that pro-civil unions campaigners also used the “how are civil unions and gay people hurting you anyway?” argument. We further remind Mr. Vercoe that the primary driver behind civil unions was equality and representation of relationships under the law.

It seems more than a little hypocritical that here is New Zealand’s most vocal anti gay movement complaining that someone wants to do a minority exactly what it wanted to do to the gay community. We would like to ask Mr Vercoe why he, his church and his party feel the need to attack gay people “like that”. We also suggest that before Destiny attempts to make comments on minority rights it should look at its own abysmal track record.
