Tainui Immigration Poll Results Released

Tainui Maori Party members in Tainui have released results from a poll on immigration among Mâori voters.

The poll, conducted at Frankton Markets on 27 August, shows overwhelming feeling about reducing levels of immigration.

200 Mâori voters were asked the question “Do you think immigration to New Zealand is too high, too low of just right?

Voters were asked to circle the appropriate answer.

83% of Mâori stated that immigration was ‘too high.’ Many stated verbally that immigration is ‘way too high’ and made other comments.

Mâori Party members felt that they had touched on a nerve in the Mâori community.

Many made statements about immigrants taking jobs and about what it was like to be outnumbered as tangata whenua.

The Mâori Party is keen to discuss the levels of immigration and how this affects their political power. The Party will not enter into immigrant bashing by picking on smaller ethnic groups.

Current levels of immigration of over 40,000 per year would be taken to the negotiating table after the election. Over 20 years this would equate to 800,000 immigrants.

There are over 800,000 immigrants in this country and 500,000 Mâori.

Since 1999 over 300,000 immigrants have arrived in NZ.

Other results

10% of voters felt that levels of immigration was ‘just right.’

3% felt it was too low.

The remaining voters had no comment.
