Ngapuhi’s consultation ‘disaster’

Ngapuhi has already spent hundreds of thousands of its fisheries settlement trying to get its members to join the runanga, but with little success, according to Ngapuhi monitoring group Te Uira. Spokesman David Rankin has revealed that the runanga’s leaders are now desperate to get Ngapuhi to sign up to the runanga, but have so far failed.

‘Less than 30% of our people have joined the runanga list’, says Mr Rankin, ‘which is the lowest for any iwi in the country. We now have to ask ourselves what is deterring Ngapuhi from joining the runagna’.

‘It is costing us hundreds of thousands of dollars with the runanga leaders staying in expensive hotels and travelling around the country, in some cases calling hui at which only a few people attend. As a result, Ngapuhi is facing a mandate crisis’.
