Police Support Rewrite Of The Police Act 1958

Police welcome the announcement of a rewrite of the Police Act 1958, the Acting Commissioner of Police, Steve Long, said today.

Acting Commissioner Long said the Act was due for a comprehensive overhaul to bring it into line with the requirements of the 21st century.

"While the principles of policing have not changed a great deal the whole environment in which police work has changed dramatically.

"For example, we have had to work hard to align our human resource policy and practice under the Act with modern human resource practice.

"Police will work with the Minister to produce what we anticipate will be a start of the art and values driven piece of legislation which will help the organisation deliver improved service to the people of New Zealand," said Mr Long.
