Prison should be consistent with the crime

6/4/2005

MEDIA RELEASE

Grey Power advocate that a prisoner should be interred in a prison consistent with the crime

For many years, Grey Power has been advocating that offenders must be sentenced in accordance to the severity of the crime they commit.

Grey Power Federation National President, Mr Graham Stairmand states "In the past there has been some blame leveled at the Judiciary System for not imposing adequate sentences on criminals for crimes of extreme violence including murder and attempted murder. Grey Power now finds that the Corrections Department is continuing with the 'Don’t upset the inmate' attitude and, at the request of the offender and/or their relatives, is shifting violent criminals around the country into institutions not suited to the severity of the crime for which they have been sentenced, nor are the facilities adequate for the protection of prison staff from these violent offenders."

"This was highlighted on TV One Six O’clock news on Saturday 1st April 2006."

"Grey Power calls on the Corrections Department to support the Judiciary in their sentencing by keeping dangerous criminals out of the community and retaining them in appropriate institutions where they are equiped to deal with violent offenders, and to give better protection to prison staff. While rehabilitation may be a possibility, the sentence is punishment for the crime committed and should not be reduced in effect by the Correction Department shifting these offenders to other institutions at the wish and will of them or their families."
