NZ Police Hopes TV Series Will Spur Interest In A Police Career New Zealand

New Zealand Police hopes a TV series about recruit training will encourage more people to think about joining Police.

The series entitled 'Police College' starts screening on TV2 from Tuesday 11 April at 10:30pm. It follows the Police 10-7 show which also screens on Tuesday nights.

Footage for the eight episode documentary was filmed at the Police College last year. The film crew followed several intakes of recruits over their 19-weeks' initial training, says Police College Training Commander Superintendent Alistair (Olly) Beckett.

'The series covers many of the key elements of recruit training at the Police College. Viewers will get a good insight into what it's like to join Police - the skills you learn and the sorts of attributes you need to bring to the job.'

The recruits are followed as they settle into their residential course in Porirua, learn about the law, how to deal with volatile people, and how to make arrests. They're taught specialist skills in defensive tactics, undertake driving and firearms training and spend time on field experience.

'For anyone who's thought about joining Police, the series will give you a good indication about whether it's the job for you. We're hoping it will excite people to give us a call and find out more.'

The commitment to increase frontline police numbers by 1000 over the next three years means the organisation is actively recruiting, says Superintendent Beckett.
