Animal Rights Demo In Capital Today
LOCAL animal rights campaigners are angered that the government has not given a phase out period for all battery hen cages. To make their point, demonstrators will take their case to the Ministry of Agriculture, 25 The Terrace, Wellington, at midday today - Friday July 28.
Campaign Against Factory Farming (CAFF) spokesperson Debra Ashton says it is obvious that the profits of battery hen farmers have been put before the welfare needs of the animals.
“In his announcement yesterday, Agriculture Minister Jim Anderton ignored Regulations Review Committee’s recommendations to rewrite a code that does not comply with the Animal Welfare Act.
“He has also ignored existing scientific studies that prove barn and cage systems provide better welfare conditions for hens. A number of other countries have introduced phase out periods based on this evidence.
“Mr Anderton has not only let down the animals under his jurisdiction but also the high numbers of New Zealanders who support a phase out of battery hen cages.
