Book buyers dig deep for DCM

Thousands of book lovers took to Welllington's waterfront last weekend to support Downtown Community Ministry and their annual book fair.

Bargain hunters were plentiful and went home satisfied with their purchases that totalled over 40 000 books by the end of Sunday.

More people came to this year's fair than any other.

The book fair is DCM's biggest fundraiser and attracts people looking for quality books, at a good price on almost any topic.

Shoppers are also aware that everything they spend at the book fair will help further the work of DCM.

"We saw some choose to give a donation at the checkout and many others told the till operator to 'keep the change,'" says Director Stephanie McIntyre.

DCM will use the money raised at the book fair to continue its efforts addressing homelessness in the city.

In the last year, DCM has assisted over 100 clients settle into stable and improved accommodation.

However, with Wellington's tight rental market it is increasingly hard to house the people who come for help.

Stephanie says, "A facility in Wellington for chronic alcoholics can't come soon enough".

"Too many of our clients with chronic alcoholism are bouncing from place to place and are unable to find accommodation that meets their needs. A 'wet hostel,' is a place where they can be supported in a professional environment that helps manage their drinking."

DCM and several other groups continue to work on furthering the wet hostel idea and making it a reality.

"Every time we assist another client with chronic alcoholism, we are further encouraged to keep pursuing this plan," says Stephanie.
